Convertible (Cabriolet)
A convertible, or cabriolet, has a roof that folds away or comes off, letting you drive in the open air. It is rented less for practicality and more for the experience — sun, sky and the landscape with nothing overhead.
On the right road it is a treat. A coastal drive along the Atlantic, a sweep through palm-lined avenues or a mountain pass at golden hour is exactly what a convertible is made for, and on holiday that pleasure can be the whole point.
Be realistic about its limits. Boot space and rear seats are usually tight, the open cabin is hot under a strong midday sun and exposed to wind and dust, and these cars often sit in a pricier category with a higher deposit.
Rent one for the joy of a scenic leg of the trip rather than as your do-everything car. Many travellers pair a sensible vehicle for the bulk of the journey with a day in a convertible where the road really deserves it.
