Telematics
Telematics is the technology that gathers data from a vehicle — its location, mileage, mechanical health and sometimes driving behaviour — and sends it back to the operator. It is the system behind a fleet knowing where its cars are and how they are doing.
For rental companies it is a practical tool. It helps locate and manage vehicles, schedule maintenance before something breaks, support roadside assistance by pinpointing a car, and recover a stolen vehicle. Much of it works quietly in the background.
For a renter, the main thing to know is that a modern rental may be telematics-equipped, which can be reassuring — faster help if you break down — but also means the car can log location and usage data during your rental.
It is reasonable to be aware of this rather than alarmed by it. If you have questions about what is recorded, the company’s rental terms or privacy policy should explain what telematics data is collected and how it is used.
