On-Demand Mobility
On-demand mobility means transport that comes when you ask for it, rather than running on a fixed timetable. You open an app, request a ride, car or scooter, and it is arranged then and there — the service flexes around you instead of you fitting around it.
It is the thread running through ride-hailing, car sharing and similar services: immediacy. The contrast is a scheduled bus or train that leaves at set times whether or not it suits you; on-demand options aim to remove that wait and rigidity.
Car rental has its own on-demand edge in the move toward instant, app-based booking and contactless pickup, where you can reserve and collect a car with little notice. The traditional desk-and-paperwork model is gradually getting faster and more flexible.
For a traveller, the umbrella idea is simply that more of your transport can now be summoned in the moment. Knowing the term helps you recognise the family of app-first services — including modern car rental — that share that instant, on-request character.
