Free-Floating Car Sharing
Free-floating car sharing lets you pick up a car wherever you find one parked within a service area and leave it anywhere within that zone when you are done. There are no fixed docking stations — the cars "float" around the city, located through an app.
It is the most flexible flavour of car sharing for one-way, spur-of-the-moment trips: grab the nearest car, drive across town, and park it without returning to where you started. Pricing is usually by the minute, with fuel, parking in the zone and insurance built in.
It contrasts with station-based sharing, where you must collect and return the car to set points. Free-floating trades that predictability for convenience, which is why it suits short, unplanned hops rather than guaranteed availability at a specific spot.
For a traveller it is mostly a city-living tool and depends on a service operating where you are. It is useful to understand as the everyday, app-driven end of the mobility spectrum, distinct from booking a car for a multi-day trip.
