Late Return Fee
Rentals are priced in 24-hour days counted from the exact moment you drove off. A late return fee kicks in when you bring the car back after that clock runs out, and the charge is rarely pro-rated by the hour.
Most agencies allow a short grace period — commonly 30 to 60 minutes — to absorb traffic and queues. Roll past it, though, and you are usually charged for a whole additional day, even if you are only an hour or two over.
There can be a knock-on effect too: the car may be promised to the next customer, so a long delay can cost more than just the extra day. If you know you will be late, a quick phone call to extend the rental is far cheaper than turning up unannounced.
Plan the return with the same care as the pickup. Build in time for fuel, traffic and the walk back from the drop-off, and you will keep the day count — and the bill — exactly as booked.
