4x4 (Four-Wheel Drive)
A 4x4 drives all four wheels at once, which transforms grip on loose or slippery surfaces. Where a normal car spins a wheel and gets stuck, a four-wheel-drive spreads the power and keeps moving through sand, mud, gravel and steep rough tracks.
This is the genuine off-road tool, and the distinction from a regular SUV matters. Many SUVs only drive two wheels and are not built to leave the tarmac; a true 4x4 is what you want for desert pistes, remote mountain routes or the soft sand around the dunes.
In Morocco it unlocks the adventurous end of a trip — reaching a desert camp, exploring back-country roads in the Atlas, or driving tracks that a normal car simply cannot. It is also heavier on fuel and rental cost, so it is worth it only if your route really needs it.
If your plan includes serious off-road sections, book a 4x4 specifically and confirm it is genuine four-wheel drive, not just a tall-looking SUV. For sealed roads and cities, you are paying for capability you will not use.
