Authorized Driver
An authorized driver is anyone listed on the rental agreement as permitted to drive — the main renter plus any additional drivers who have been added properly. The list on the contract is the definition; if a name is not on it, that person is not authorized.
It is the concept that ties together licensing and insurance. The waivers, liability cover and theft protection only apply while an authorized driver is at the wheel. Hand the keys to a friend who was never added and you step outside the cover entirely.
This is one of the most common ways travellers accidentally void their protection. It feels harmless to let a co-traveller drive for an hour, but if anything happens in that hour, the rental company can treat the whole incident as uninsured.
The rule is simple: only let people drive who are named on the agreement, and add anyone who might need to take the wheel before you set off.
